Star Wars VII thoughts: coming to you in twitter format

I had just a few thought on the new Star Wars film and opened Twitter to voice them.  However, I soon realized I had too many thoughts for that medium and decided to write a post about it.  I also decided to keep my thoughts in 140-character increments for some reason.

Here we go:
  1. I would love to love Star Wars (as well as many things in pop culture) but nothing about it moves the needle. Kids' movies aren't exciting.
  2. Asking me if I care about Star Wars is like asking me if I care about the Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. I hope the kids like it.
  3. Star Wars might be a fine film, but let's review: magical powers, make-believe weapons, fantasy setting. Ergo, kids' movie.
  4. But it's wrong to think all kids' movies are unworthy of adults' time, but for other reasons I really don't like most films.
  5. Most low-brow art (like major films or TV) reflect how the artist either perceives the world or wishes the world to be.
  6. It's subtle, but in every film I can see the views of the artist and it's always another testament to how our society is circling the drain.
  7. It may not be the message the filmmaker is trying to convey, but he betrays many widely-held views of the world I find distasteful.
  8. Star Wars is just another example: celebrate the triumph of females! Not doing anything important, just having roles in kids' movie.
  9. Simplistic adventure films and stories like Star Wars are inherently less interesting/relatable with female rather than male leads.
  10. The Hero's Journey, in an adventure movie like Star Wars, is a male journey because it is on both macro and micro levels.
  11. A female's Hero's Journey will, by nature, be mostly interpersonal and doesn't translate to large-scale adventures like Star Wars.
  12. Some excited budding feminists might enjoy a female lead in an adventure film, but it doesn't appeal on a primal level.
  13. Add to all this: I might just be a contrarian.  I have a hard time liking anything everyone likes.
  14. It's like the fact that everyone likes something means they can't see any of its faults. Thus, I must point them out.
  15. So to answer your question, no.  I will not be seeing Star Wars VII.

  1. I was never able to put into words what you, in several posts, understand: #12. Yeah, I agree; and this explains why Buffy TVS, even with 2 cute chicks in the series, just did not work at all, was totally ridiculous (only watched it 'cause a gf at the time, did). I don't want to see cute chicks beat stuff up; so, pretty sure they were trying to appeal to the rapidly growing lesbian contingent out there (as evidenced further by Buff's sidekick going to the other side later in the show).

As to sRawRats, :p , while I'm a bit of a Trekkie, I was never into the Lucas series, except insofar as it's space stuff, and I'll watch any space op. Years after seeing the original in the theater, I watched it again, on a lark. It is sooooooooooo cheezy, sub-B movie, like how did *that* ever take off? As studios often compete with each other, similar films released in the same year, there was a much better 'B' from the same time: Battle Beyond the Stars. Did you ever catch that one, er, understandably later than it's original release, har?
