It's not that disliking Trump is in and of itself a childish thing. It's that those who don't support him do so in the most childish of ways. Never respond, never debate. Just name-call, make hyperbolic statements, and gesticulate wildly.
Here's a smattering of my unscientific survey of social media and idiotic articles together with my responses. To hear the real hysteria, just peruse the comment sections for any of these links. I linked to the posting on Facebook to make that easier.
From CNN Politics:
One of Donald J. Trump's latest critics, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling, may have some of the harshest words yet for the Republican front-runner's controversial policy proposal.
"How horrible," tweeted Rowling, along with a BBC report on Trump's call to ban Muslims. "Voldemort was nowhere near as bad," she added.
Voldemort is the central villain in the series and considered to be the most powerful "Dark Wizard" of all time.
In order to contextualize complex ideas, we now have to make analogies to something people can relate to -- a children's story. Dear God, what kind of reputable news source cares about the opinion of some woman who is famous, not for intellect or political knowledge, but for dreaming up a story about a fucking magical world with wizards and goblins? This is either a condemnation of CNN, its readers who will click these articles, or both.
For the record, half the shit in Harry Potter is ripped from Lord of the Rings, and none of the books are particularly well-written -- at least not to the point where adults should be over the moon for them.
From the Huffington Post:
Back in July, we announced our decision to put our coverage of Trump's presidential campaign in our Entertainment section instead of our Politics section.
But that doesn't mean we in the media should in any way let Trump or those who would follow his footsteps off the hook. So as we cover his daily campaign, we'll constantly remind the public of what he stands for, citing references and providing links.
For example:
1) His enthusiasm for creating a database of all Muslims in the United States.
2) His ongoing lies about Muslims in New Jersey celebrating 9/11.
3) His status as birther-in-chief, cynically sowing doubt about President Obama's legitimacy as the duly elected President of the United States.
4) His misogyny -- here's just one HuffPost piece on this, but there's no shortage of these.
5) His xenophobia and scapegoating of immigrants, including his lies about Mexican immigrants and his ardent desire to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
6) His unmistakable passion for bullying. Again, there's no shortage of examples, but you could start with his defense of supporters who roughed up a protester at one of his rallies or his ridiculing of a disabled New York Times reporter.
"He's so mean, we're putting him in the Entertainment Section! That'll show him and his supporters what WE think of them!"
I love how they post stories about what Trump says as if simply the event itself is proof of its falsehood. "Bullying," "xenophobia," "misogyny," "scapegoating." Sniffle. Whaaa.
Only #2 is actually an editorial statement about the legitimacy of what Trump has said instead of an emotional response. Of course, they're wrong on that, too. Lack of evidence does not mean it didn't happen. Wait, there is evidence? Oops.
Actually, #5 contains an accusation of dishonesty, but since they didn't say which "lie" they were talking about, it's hard to respond. I'm guessing, though, they wouldn't like the answer. Read Ann Coulter's book and come talk to me. Of course, you may need to read it in a "safe space."
BTW, #1 is bullshit, too -- as anyone with an objective brain noticed when they watched the interview.
From CNN:
The chairman of the Republican Party and the Republican Speaker of the House on Tuesday condemned GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump's call to ban all Muslims from entering the United States.
House Speaker Paul Ryan said at a press conference that Trump's comments are "not who we are as a party" and violate the Constitution.
"This is not conservatism," the Wisconsin representative said, adding, "Some of our best and biggest allies in this struggle and fight against radical Islam terror are Muslims."
Hahaha. This doesn't mean much coming from someone who failed to get any conservatives to vote for him. On the other hand, that does mean he knows a lot about the "party" just very little about conservatism.
Funny to label it as non-conservative considering how well Trump is doing in the polls. What a clown, this Ryan. If we want to be honest, Muslims have a history of conquest of nonbelievers, protesting against Western values, forcing their religion on the majority, harassing natives for not living Islamic law, and doing all this quite militantly. Many Americans, especially the grown-up conservatives, have figured this out. Sorry Mr. Ryan hasn't got the message while in the safety of his mansions and bodyguards.
And more name-calling: "Not a real conservative!"
From NBC:
White House press secretary Josh Earnest sharply denounced Donald Trump on Tuesday, saying that his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States is "disqualifying" and calling on all other Republicans to renounce any support for the real estate mogul even if he becomes the GOP nominee.
What? He said something you found uncomfortable? Ban him! No takesies-backsies!
Still waiting on this guy to answer whether shipping guns to cartels, stoking domestic racial tensions, making backdoor deals with corporations, selectively enforcing laws like immigration, unilaterally bombing other nations, or trying to circumvent the 2nd Amendment means Obama is disqualified from being President.
From Aberdeen Voice:
Donald Trump’s latest attacks on religious groups, nationalities, and people with physical challenges spurred Aberdeen-based campaigner Suzanne Kelly to take action. Kelly has launched petitions asking Home Secretary Teresa May to block Trump from the UK for his hate speech.
How do you think the HuffPo response to this went? I once thought Free Speech was one of the great achievements of Western Civilization. Guess not. At least, not if it hurts me in my feels.
Last, but not least, some idiots made a Islam v. Christianity video where Christians were told they were reading the Koran but it was actually a Bible.
Does anyone need to me to explain how manipulative this technique is? How poor a method of surveying it is? How framing the question as they do puts the person's mind in such a place that they will not give an answer that's meaningful for your purpose? No? OK, then, let's just move on.
But yeah, it's just so totally INSANE that Trump would want to keep Muslims out of our country, you guys. Another thing that still astounds me is how well these people shit on Christianity while supporting such a medieval religion in Islam. Baffling.
Ryan is a RINO, disgusts me more than even Kasich. President Trump probably had to make certain concessions after taking office. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteMy experience with folks of both stripes is that the Left employs name-calling far more than the Right even got around to thinking of.
